On Wednesday, September 16, at 7 PM, Gesa Power House Theatre proudly features Art, Creativity & Immigrant Youth, presented by speaker Lakeya Afolalu. This event is sponsored by Walla Walla and Humanities Washington.

Young people across the U.S.—and especially in Washington—are growing up between languages, countries, and cultures. In this talk, explore how immigrant and transnational youth, particularly girls of color, use the arts to express their identities while navigating transnational lives and multilingualism.

Drawing from personal experience, community-based work in South Seattle, and youth stories, Afolalu highlights how creative expression becomes a vital space for self-expression, community, and voice.

Lakeya Afolalu lives in Seattle, and is an assistant professor of language, literacy, and culture at the University of Washington. A Nigerian and African American scholar and leader, her work explores immigrant and transnational youth identities through literacy, language, and the arts. She has a PhD from the University of Texas at Austin.

Imagine if Neil Young and Janis Joplin had three love children, and those children grew up to like folk rock and hip hop.

The Junebugs combine high-energy pop and rock with Pacific Northwest folksy goodness to create a genre-bending sound you can kick up your heels to. 

The Junebugs originated on the Vancouver, BC circuit before moving back home to Portland, OR. There, guitarist Barrett picked up drummer Kyle Owen and bassist Nathaniel Daniel, to round out the dynamic trio. Covering everything from Tom Petty to TLC to Lorde, the eclectic taste of the trio ranges from turn-of-the-century Americana to modern Hip Hop, with a strong emphasis on vocal harmony.

Their original tunes have a dreamy, sweet quality reminiscent of Neil Young and Iron & Wine, peppered with fiery banjo lines. There is something for everyone here.

Brittany Collins is an Americana singer-songwriter hailing from picturesque Skagit Valley, Washington.

Inspired by the natural beauty of her surroundings, Brittany weaves heartfelt narratives into her music, blending folk, country, and rock influences. Her debut album “Things I Tell My Therapist”, released in 2022, generated positive press from American Songwriter, Adobe & Teardrops and Americana Highways and other notable publications. 

Joined in 2024 by her band, Collins & Co. have performed at music festivals across the country, including the NW Folklife Festival, Americanafest and Brodie Nation Music Festival. She has shared the stage with major-label acts such as Noah Cyrus, Hillstomp, William Elliott Whitmore, and Rhett Miller. The band is currently hard at work on their second full-length album, with singles set to be released throughout 2026. Their latest single “Gone with the Wind”, is available now to stream everywhere.
